Phoenix and Bear leave with promises to try to get to the bottom of what is going on here. I begged them to let me go to no avail. Phoenix may have saved me from Joel, but the claws of grief still have a hold on her. Getting answers about what happened that night may have the claws loosening their grip. I’d agree with the need for answers if it didn’t feel like my life was hanging in the balance.

If Phoenix’s brother is the one that stabbed Stokes, then he was there the night of Luke’s death. Was Josh the one who pulled the trigger that killed Luke, or was it someone else? If he was fighting Stokes, I imagine it was the other man there. For some reason, this brings me some comfort. I don’t want Phoenix’s brother to be the one who murdered Luke. In another life, I think Phoenix and I could be friends. To have someone that understands your grief and just sit with you in it is a treasure.

I collapse against the dirty mattress. I’m too exhausted to think about what kinds of things have happened here. I let my mind drift to memories of summers spent at Strickland’s with Stokes and Luke. I try not to dwell on these times very often. The overwhelming sadness I feel when I do is often too much to bear. Our last trip to Strickland’s is one of my best memories and also the most bittersweet. After all the new information I’ve received in the last couple of days, I feel like I’m looking at that trip through a different lens. Both guys were acting off that summer. They didn’t make time for us all to hang out like every year prior. As a teenager, it didn’t raise the flags it does now as I reexamine that last week of Luke’s life. They told me they were just working a lot. Were they working for the MC back then? It did seem like they had more money than two teenagers working for minimum wage should have. If they were mixed up with the club back then, that would explain Luke’s death better than some random shooting. It still doesn’t clarify how I got mixed up in all this. Having a slightly better understanding of what happened to Luke calms me, even in this messed-up situation. I can’t believe my brother and Stokes were in a motorcycle club, and I didn’t know it. Stokes on that bike was a sight to see. I don’t think my teenage self would have been able to control her hormones. With the thought of me riding more than just his bike, I drift off to sleep.

A noise wakes me. I’m too out of it to tell what it was. I’m in the weird place between awake and asleep when I hear it again. It’s coming from inside the room. Whoever it is, is standing in the dark. I can sense their presence despite not being able to see a thing.
